How is Japanese skin care different from Western skin care?

by Kayo Kobayashi on June 04, 2021

Having grown up in Japan, all my skin care routines have been embedded in my mind from a young age. All women I was surrounded by (grandmother, mother, cousins, friends, and colleagues) have had established skin care regime. It was very natural for me to be conscious about skin care having watched them looking after their skin each day and every day. Nothing fancy but they all believe skin care is a daily ritual.

Japanese women prefer anticipating rather than needing an instant emergency superficial cure. It is actually the foundation of Japanese philosophy for everything, and skin care is no different.

While Western skin care is more concerned with correcting damages after they have occurred, Japanese beauty care is more about anticipation and prevention.

We believe prevention is everything. Taking the right steps before something happens is much easier and effective.

Lotion (aka, keshosui) is a prevention of dehydration which can ultimately cause all sort of problems including faster process of aging. Japanese believe hydration is the core part of skin care for heathy skin. Emulsion that is light textured Japanese moisturiser is also a prevention of hydration loss. Well balanced hydration and oil in skin will achieve soft skin “mochi-hada” what Japanese women try to thrive for irrespective of their age.

Just like how SPF is well-known as a protection of the skin from the sun in Western skin care, lotion and emulsion is a very vital part of Japanese skin care.

3P’s of Japanese skin care tips

Prevent

Prevention is everything in J-Beauty. Prevention goes a long way. Avert dehydration for healthy and youthful skin to avoid getting fine lines and wrinkles. Skin dehydration accelerates it's aging process.

Provide

Take your time and observe your skin daily. Is your skin dull due to dehydration? Is your skin feeling dry and itchy? Red and upset? These are some of the signs for you to be observing. Correct observation and provision of skin care will save your skin. Healthy diet can also support wellness of your skin.

Protect

Protect your skin from damage.  Dehydration is one of the biggest enemies of skin's aging process. Wear SPF, UV contributes to collagen damage in skin and not to mention causes dark spots, pigmentation, and fine lines.
